By 2:30, however, she was not feeling too well.....being a mean mom, I told her to go to volleyball practice and see how she'd do. By 4, she called back and just couldn't finish practice and her coach said she didn't look too good. Poor thing came home, dropped onto the couch and was out. When I went to wake her up I realized she was burning up! She had a 101.8 temp and was not doing well at all. After a shower and homework, she headed to bed by 8:00....this morning it wasn't much better. A trip to urgent care resulted in a diagnosis of probable strep throat and some penicillin! We are hoping she will be feeling better tomorrow once she gets some of the antibiotics on board. So she missed her 2nd day of high school....we'll see how day 3 goes! Madison had a great first day at school today! She has her first "man teacher" and he is just wonderful. He keeps referring to his "inner 10 year old" and likes to keep the kids busy learning and having fun and is definitely not boring! He told the class that his mom made him promise that when he became a teacher that he would not load his students down with homework....Madison and I are praising the Lord for that mother of his! She is really looking forward to this school year. So my friend Terri calls and says to go outside and check out a huge cloud just to the east of us...there is lightening flashing inside the cloud. Mind you, there are no other clouds around....just this one huge cloud with the lightening flashing! It was an amazing display as the heavens declared God's majesty! I captured this video (us talking on it is pretty lame....especially when the neighbor comes home and we are standing in his driveway!). Oh, well we just wanted to share! Cool video but it doesn't really do the display proper justice. We got the girls up about 7:30 this morning and told them to get their bathing suits on and we told them we were heading out for an adventure! Thanks to a tip (and boogie boards, umbrella, etc) from some great friends (thanks Jeff & Kathleen!), we headed to Carlsbad for the day. We got there early enough to get a great parking place and headed down the steps to the beautiful beach. We have not made it to the beach at all this summer so this was a long overdue trip. It was a beautiful day .... especially considering that when we left home it was pouring rain and lots of thunder! We took a chance and God was good to provide a perfect day at a beautiful location. The girls took to Boogie boarding right away and Doug recpatured his youth and spent practically the whole day chasing waves! We had never been to Carlsbad before and found it to be officially one of our very favorite places now! We spent the whole day there and left about 5:30 and headed for home (after our "dinner" of Cold Stone Ice Cream!).....sometimes it's fun to just freak the girls out!!! We were all thankful for the getaway and safe travels. Madison got this adorable haircut and wanted to share it on the blog. We headed over to her school bright and early on Saturday morning to see the classroom postings. She is in Mr. Macro's (pronounced: Ma Crow)class and it's the first man teacher she will have had. She is very excited as several of her good friends from her Bible study group are in her class this year. Blessings to you my Peanut for this school year! After a week of tryouts and 2 cuts, Chelcie got up bright and early Thursday morning to head over to the high school gym to check out the posted try out results. She is pretty excited and has already started team practice. Way to go Chelc! Look who made the volleyball team! Chelcie is heading to high school and we can hardly believe it! We headed to the school to go through an orientation process that included getting her school photo ID card, getting her PE clothes, her class list and even her books! Her classes are: Honors English, Honors Geometry, World Cultures, Honors Biology, Spanish 2 and PE. It exhausts me just looking at her schedule! She is really pushing herself with the IB schedule she has elected to do. The High School is an IB (International Baccalaureate) school and works a bit differently than a regular school and has some great opportunities. She is taking it one semester at a time for now and is prepping for an IB commitment that comes in her Junior year so we'll see how she fares. We are looking forward to this new chapter with her and especially Friday night football games! Chelcie is trying out for the volleyball team all this week so we'll see how that goes! I have spent the last 10 weeks doing an incredible Bible Study by Beth Moore and tonight is the last night. It has been wonderful to remember that I am to continue to believe that: God is who He says He is, He can do what He says He can do, I am who God says I am, I can do all things through Christ and that God's word is alive and active in me! It was a great journey through the Bible as well as a reflection on my life to see where God was so faithful even before I had an active faith in Him! I am so thankful that Jesus never let me go and never gave up on me...Thank you Lord! OK, the bracelet -- The scripture reference for the bracelet comes from Numbers 15:37-39. The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. My thread bracelet is about to come apart! Our Bible study leader got these plastic bracelets to last us much longer and to serve as a daily reminder to Believe God! Sweet story -- I talked about these things with Madison as she was fearful of her flight to Idaho and I gave her my bracelet to wear when she went. She loved it so much and wants to keep it so I had to get another one. Doug and I took the girls to Ontario airport for their flight to Salt Lake City. It was quite nerve racking to put such precious cargo on a plane to head out.....God was good and calmed my spirit! They had a great flight. Madison had been quite nervous as this was her 1st time on a plane. We had been praying all week and then I came across a great verse for her in my Bible study. She wrote it down and prayed through it and God met her right were she was at. "Here is what I am commanding you to do. Be strong and brave. Do not be terrified. Do not lose hope. I am the LORD your God. I will be with you everywhere you go." Joshua 1:9 Doug and I took some time to head to Ontario Mills Mall, see a movie (Get Smart....very funny!)and have dinner. Funny thing, the girls made it to Salt Lake City and then the 3 hour drive to Idaho Falls before Doug and I even made it home! We are able to praise, however, as God took her home peacefully and has relieved the extreme pain that she was suffering. We are praising Him for providing her ultimate healing....although it did not occur here on earth, we can be sure of her perfect, cancer free existence in heaven, in the presence of her savior! So we are heading out of Downey for home and decide to stop for something to eat. I could not believe my eyes when I saw Downey High School....lot's of new construction! We decided to take a walk around the campus. Well the football stadium has been completely redone with astroturf and a new stadium! We showed the kids the exact place where Doug and I met and then where he asked me to "go out" with him....how can it be that it was almost 23 years ago and we can remember it like yesterday?!? Anyway, here are some pics of the campus. It was a nice visit and on Sunday we got to see Christopher & Jody brought the twins by for a bit in the afternoon. Everyone headed out for some fun in the pool. The guys were all doing crazy flips in the pool.....I think Christopher was the only one to really land the full flip! We love you Grandma & Grandpa......Happy Anniversary! So our tournament is over, we're checked out of our hotel and it's only 11:30 on Saturday morning. We are in no hurry to head back to the heat of the desert so Doug takes us on an adventure. We took the girls to Hollywood! We had a fun time surprising them.....we had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen on Hollywood Blvd. Then headed out for a walk to see the Walk of Fame and to Groman's Chinese Theatre to see all the hand/foot prints. After checking out all the sights we headed over to UCLA to show Chelcie the campus, drove through Beverly Hills and even drove down Rodeo Drive. I was probably a bit more excited to see all the amazing stores as the girls didn't recognize many of them (thank goodness!). We had a real fun time.
